U.S. Extreme Skier Plake among Avalanche Survivors


A renowned American skier was counted as a survivor after having been caught in the Himalayan avalanche that occurred Sept. 21. The avalanche was said to have swept Mount Manaslu at an elevation of 7,000 meters. Along with the renowned skier, several survivors have left the mountain and postponed their plans of climbing this season. 


After Rita, La. Town Walls Off Flooding


Hurricane Rita left the effect of 9 1/2 feet of water on the City Hall steps barely making the flood line of the building. Rita officially became a hurricane once hitting the Texas- Louisiana border and was dawned a Category 3 hurricane. In total the natural diaster brought over 20 feet of water in some areas. 



Air Force One aborts landing, second try successful


President Barack Obama's plane, Air Force One, was put on a delay due to weather conditions. Air Force One had to circle around before landing in Toledo, Ohio for the president's speech. The visibility at the time was three miles and that included fog and mist.

Suicide bomber kills 8 South Africans, 4 Afghans in Kabul

Because of an anti-Islam film, mocking Muhammed 12 people are dead in the Afghan capital. This attack was claimed as the second worst attack involving anger because of offense taken to Muhammed. In response to these attacks foreign troops have been asked to fight against the Afghans.

Indonesians torch US flag in protest in country's third-largest city

An American flag was burned in Indonesia because of an American film that discriminated against Islam and the Prophet Muhammed. Many Indonesians demanded that the makers of the film suffer severe consequences. Many Islamic groups flooded the U.S embassy in Jakarta in protest of the film.

Colombian president: Wanted drug lord captured


Daniel Barrera, one of Columbia's greatest last crime bosses, has finally been captured. Barrera had been involved in drug trafficking crimes for over 20 years. Most of his crimes took place mainly in the eastern plains of Columbia. The price he faces for all the charges would be a maximum sentence of life in prison.

After six years, this new iphone is the sixth unveil in iPhones for Apple. The main differences would be the new lightning connector port and the 4G LTE connection. The new phone starts at $199 dollars. 

Late-night talks fail to get deal in Chicago teachers strike


A teacher strike began late Sunday night in representation for over 30,000 teachers and support staff in Chicago. The union's main purpose for the strike dealt with jobs for laid-off teachers. Since 2011 the salary's of teachers in the Chicago area have dropped tremendously.


For New York Times, 9/11 anniversary not fit for front page

With the 11-year anniversary of Sept. 11 passing, the New York times created an uproar in not placing the topic on the front cover of their newspaper. One of the issues stated was that there isn't too much to say about the issue that hasn't already been said. The Time website did compensate, however, with news stories about the attacks frequently updating throughout the day.

Amherst man facing child pornography charges


Recently, Galen Andrew Wright, an Amherst resident was charged with 10 counts of child pornography. The task force that the investigator is involved in is one of several throughout the country. is currently in custody because investigators were able to locate where the crime was being committed through various ways of technology. 

Missing 8 foot python in Roanoke


An eight foot python has escaped from a man's possession and is loose throughout the city. The man believes that the python got away by a gap under the cage door. The snake has still yet to be found but is keeping animal control on their toes.


Local schools may have to pay for Congress' actions


The local schools of the Roanoke area have undergone large budget cuts. Over the past four years, 15 million dollars in federal funding went down the drain. Leaders within the school are holding meetings in order to include the community in the situation hoping to change the outcome.
